Anishinabe Clan System
A long time ago before humans, the clans already existed. The
Creator came to the animals, fish and birds and told them the humans
were coming and they were to be pitied because they would have nothing.
So each of the animals, fish and birds said “We will take care of them
and show them how to live in harmony with all of Creation. We will
sacrifice ourselves to be food, our skins will keep them warm and we
will teach them the ceremonies and medicines to heal themselves.”
These clans are still with the Algonquin today.
Your is with you from the day you are born. Your received it from
your father and they take care of you through life. A clan is identified
by the character traits exhibited by that animal for example the Bear
clan are the internal security for the village as they are always
enforcing the perimeter of their territory and marking it. There are
seven main clans but within a clan there maybe different types of
animals, birds or fish.

The Crane and Loon clans were given the power of leadership and
chieftainship. By working together, these two chief clans gave people a
balanced government with each serving as a check on the other.

The Marten Clan served as the warrior clan for the people. They
provided the force to protect the village at all costs from outside
invaders. They became known as master strategists in planning and the
defence of their people.

The Bird Clan’s members were the spiritual leaders of the people.
They were noted for their intuition and knowledge of the future. Leader
of their clan, because like the eagle fly high in the sky elevating his
spirit.

indulge in using harsh words of any kind. They were the peots of the
