ALGONQUIN HARVEST UPDATE 2011/2012

The Algonquins of Ontario (AOO) as represented by the Algonquin Negotiation Representatives (ANR’s) continue to work with the MNR to implement this year’s harvest plan.  We had the opportunity to participate in the Moose fly-over and to work with MNR in a much more meaningful way, to come up with this year’s moose allocations.  The good news is that the moose numbers continue to be healthy, both inside and outside the park due to the efforts of the ANRs in monitoring the past harvest numbers.  Deer numbers may be down, due to the last couple of bad winters. We request that you continue to report all deer kills, so the ANRs will have a better handle on what to do in future harvests, if winter trends continue.  Remember, we need to look out for future generations. This year there will be a draw system for both inside and outside the Park, similar to last year, and the harvester requirements will remain the same.

Elk Hunt – This year there will be a trial Adult Elk Harvest in the Bancroft area between September 1, 2011 and January 15, 2012. We have 3 Adult Elk Tags for our community draw this year. (A total of 25 Adult Elk Tags have been allocated by the Nation) Application requirements are the same as the Moose Draw and you may not apply for both a Moose Tag and an Elk Tag.    There is no Elk Calf hunt.

Please help us reduce the number of Moose calf tags issued. Every harvester must indicate if they request a calf tag if not successful in the adult draw.

Harvester requirements:

A)

Inside the Park:

6 names to an adult tag and 1 to a calf.

B)

Outside the Park:

6 names to an adult tag (Moose or Elk) and 1 to a Moose calf, but calves will be limited in WMU's 48, 55A, 55B, and 57 to help increase the herd.

C) Outside the Park: There will be a special Bow Hunt (Moose) in some of the WMU's and it will require Two names to an adult tag and One to a calf tag. The Bow Hunt will begin                                     September 15, 2011 and end on January 15, 2012.

The season for all cow moose will close on December 20, 2011.

There are no Moose Bow Tags in Algonquin Park
There are no Elk Bow Tags anywhere.

Note: If you decide to apply for a Moose bow tag you will not be able to apply for a rifle tag.
However, you will still be able to "party" hunt with those
that have Moose tags from the rifle hunt - or visa-versa.

Harvest Dates in Algonquin Park (Rifle):

             Application Instructions:

 1)      Option 1 is applicant’s first choice for desired WMU.   Option 2 will be applicant’s second choice for a WMU (area to harvest).
In the case of Elk Tags, there is no WMU selection available this year.

Please Note: that option 2 will only be used if no one applies for a certain WMU as their first choice.

In past years, several of the number 2 options were filled, so it is important to put down a second option.
