Introduction to Law Enforcement and Compliance Course (Level I)

The Algonquins of Ontario (AOO), in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources - Enforcement Branch, are being provided with a unique opportunity to participate in the Introduction to Law Enforcement and Compliance Course (Level I) to be offered by the Ministry in early 2012.

The Introduction to Law Enforcement and Compliance Course is designed to train new Conservation Officers, Deputy Conservation Officers and other individuals who require training related to their job position as well as individuals pursuing a career as a Conservation Officer.

The AOO are seeking a qualified individual to participate in the Introduction to Law Enforcement and Compliance Course (Level I).

This course includes training on the following subjects:

Introduction to Enforcement Branch  Cross Cultural Awareness Training
 Integrity in Enforcement (Code of Conduct & Professionalism)  Introduction to Intelligence-Led Enforcement
 Introduction to Law, Provincial Offences Act  Vehicle and House Searches
 Court Room Procedure/Demeanour/Practical Exercise  Familiarization with MNR Forms/Policies/Procedures
 Preparing Crown Briefs,  Conflict/Avoidance/Multiculturalism/Human
 Taking Statements, Making Proper Notes  Relations/Communication skills
 Powers of Arrest, Search, Seizure & Inspection  Youth Criminal Justice Act/Criminal Code
 Field Investigation, Enforcement Techniques  Presentation Skills/Outreach
 Aboriginal Awareness/Interim Enforcement Policy  Case Law Research
 Wildlife Forensic DNA/Forensic Firearms  Rules of Evidence
   

The classroom component of the course (February 6 to March 9, 2011 is designed for a maximum of 20 students for a five-week period. There will be no training during the March Break (i.e. March 12 to March 16, 2011). Interested candidates must be free from other commitments during this timeframe.

In addition, a two-week period from March 19 to 30, 2011 is also being considered to deliver training on the Initial Use of Force and Initial Firearms. These additional two-weeks will only be scheduled should the candidate selection warrant these courses. This portion of the course will not be mandatory attendance.

Training days will typically be from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm with one hour for lunch Monday to Friday unless otherwise directed. Travel requirements will be considered for Monday mornings and Friday afternoons. This provides students with 6.75 hrs of formal instruction and 1.25 hrs of tutorial (study time) per day to work on homework and group assignments. Full attendance is required. Candidates are expected to come prepared for outdoor and indoor exercise activities.

The successful candidate will have course costs, meals, accommodations, and travel costs (subject to prior approval) covered through a special arrangement that the Algonquins of Ontario have made with the Ministry of Natural Resources - Enforcement Branch - Training Unit.

Candidates should be aware that there is a mandatory dress code of business attire only. Please also ensure gym attire is appropriate. Shorts and shirts without sleeves (short sleeve is fine) will not be permitted.
